Today we will be discussing the issue of productivity and efficiency.

One of the issue faced by any enterprise is the productivity and efficiency of the organization.

What is Productivity?

To many, especially in a manufacturing setup, productivity for layman seems like the numbers of items you produced and this is what most bosses think too.

To quote the definition from https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/basics/productivity, Productivity is :

“There’s only so much time in a day, a year, or a life. Productivity generally refers to the ability of an individual, team, or organization to work efficiently within that time in order to maximize output.

High productivity results from a mix of factors: motivation, personality, natural talent, training or education, environment, support from others, time management, and even luck.

Physical elements also play a role in fostering productivity: Exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep can boost efficiency both in the short- and long-term.

Some people seem to be natural super-producers; others struggle to become more productive and may look to daily exercises and better habits to help them get things done.” unquote.

Limitation of SME

In this competitive business environment, for those companies especially the small medium enterprises which do not seem to have the resources, or are mainly family owned business, they will just rely on the knowledge they gain from their daily work and hard earn experience over the years.

Unlike the multinational corporation or those who can afford to hire professional managers to run the business, SME usually will just depend on the know how of the bosses from their hard work and that is how they will interpret the term productivity and efficiency.

From my own experience, I noticed some bosses in the SME have the impression that

  • as long as you spend long hours on the job, you are very productive, and
  • if a worker spends long hours and produce certain amount of work, he is efficient.

So we can see, the understanding of most SME bosses of the term Productivity and Efficiency differ from the actual definition.

And they always lament that the staffs are not productive and efficient and they seem to have the problem of increasing the productivity and efficiency of the staffs
